St. Catharines debates future of local Airport

A high flying motion will go before St. Catharines council tonight.

Councillors will debate a proposal to turn the Niagara District Airport over  to the region to run.

The same motion will go before Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake councils.

Responsibility for the airport is shared by those three municipalities.

The airport's commission believes a regional takeover is the first step toward attracting an airline to the facility that would offer international flights.

But Pelham Mayor Dave Augustyn tells CKTB's Roundtable, he would support the move, if the Niagara Central Airport in Welland also becomes regional.

Augustyn notes he won't agree to support an airport that has no direct impact, or potential economic benefits on his municipality.
